Our Pastor, Mary Cline Detrick

Pastor Mary Cline Detrick, M. of Rel. Ed and M. of Divinity, Bethany Theological Seminary.  Ordained in 1979.  Served as Church of the Brethren (CoB) General Board national staff in Life-Cycle Ministries, Human, Sexuality, and Person Awareness (1974-1983), Elgin IL; national staff for Church Women United for Ecumenical Celebrations and Global Relations (1984-1998) New York, NY; Associate Executive Mid-Atlantic District, (1998-2001) Ellicott City, MD before coming to Daleville CoB, April 2004. Rev. Detrick has traveled widely, meeting with Christians in over 32 countries, having served as Chair of the International Committee for Fellowship of the Least Coin, and Vice Chair of the International Committee for World Day of Prayer. She is co-founder of the CoB Women’s Caucus; advocate for Older Adult Ministries; author, consultant, keynote speaker and workshop leader in numerous areas for spiritual and personal development.  She has one son, David, Reston, VA, and enjoys a wide network of family, friends and colleagues. 

 History and Traditions of Daleville Church of the Brethren

The history of the Daleville Church of the Brethren stretches back to 1842 when the Botetourt County congregation was organized.  In 1912, this 700 member congregation decided to divide into three meeting groups, one of which became the Daleville Church of the Brethren.  Our church building stands on the site of the Old Valley Meetinghouse, built in 1851, one of the earliest in the area.  Our present building was erected in 1902, with the brick exterior added in 1949, and later, our educational wing.

The Daleville Brethren also operated Daleville College from 1910 to 1924.  What began as the Botetourt Normal School in 1890, then Botetourt Normal College in 1892, became Daleville College in 1910.  In 1924, Daleville College and Bridgewater College consolidated into a single school, Bridgewater College, now one of our five denominational colleges, located to the north in the Shenandoah Valley.

Daleville continues its traditional dedication to Christ's teaching as we express our faith through our commitment to simple living and our historic peace tradition.  Therefore, the community we seek to serve includes our friends and neighbors here in Botetourt County as well as the wider global community whom we believe God also loves.

Our smaller intergenerational congregation experiences the joys and the blessings of our young children, the wisdom and guidance of our elders, and the energy and vision of all those in-between, as we seek to "continue the work of Jesus...peacefully, simply, together."

Daleville's greatest strength is our loving commitment to each other.  We strive to follow Christ's call as stated in the words of one of our denominational founders, Alexander Mack:  "For the Glory of God, and our Neighbor's Good," the motto for the Church of the Brethren.
